Neighbors in North Tonawanda Disturbed by Noise and Environmental Impact of Crypto Mining Operation
Residents in North Tonawanda, N.Y. are speaking out against the noise and environmental impact of the Digihost crypto mining operation in their neighborhood. The constant noise from the plant, likened to living next to a busy airport or Niagara Falls, has become a major concern for neighbors.
Mark Polito, a resident in the area, expressed his frustration with the noise, stating that it prevents him, his guests, and even his pets from spending time outside, especially at night. The noise, he said, can even penetrate the walls of his house as he tries to watch TV.
Environmental activists have raised additional concerns about the operation, pointing to the use of fracked gas to power the mining computers, leading to increased greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to climate change and air pollution. The North Tonawanda Climate Smart Task Force Chair, Deborah Gondek, highlighted the significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions since Digihost took over the power plant.
Despite a moratorium on renewing permits for crypto mining operations, Digihost has been allowed to operate under an expired permit due to the previous owner’s application. Environmentalists are calling on the Department of Environmental Conservation to take action and reject the permit application.
The city administration is also exploring options to shut down the operation, including a proposed moratorium, and will be hosting a public meeting to address the concerns of residents. While the plant was quiet during a recent visit by media, residents suspect it was a temporary measure.
In response to the situation, the DEC stated that it has not deemed the permit renewal application to be complete and is reviewing the application to ensure compliance with the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. Residents and activists are urging for immediate action to address the noise and environmental impact of the Digihost crypto mining operation in North Tonawanda.
